Wallu Senegal and YAW plan to legislate ”against police blunders”

Ziguinchor, Jul 17 (APS) – The leader of the departmental list of the Wallu Senegal-Yewwi Askan Wi (YAW) intercoalition in Ziguinchor (south), Guy Marius Sagna, invited voters on Sunday to vote mainly in favor of the opposition, on July 31, to enable him to fight against ”police blunders and torture in places of detention”.

”There are too many police blunders in this country. There are many cases of torture in police stations and places of detention,” said the activist.

If the Wallu Senegal-YAW intercoalition wins the majority of seats in the National Assembly, it “will do something against these practices from another age”, promised Guy Marius Sagna.

A caravan of the two allied coalitions of the opposition traveled through several districts of the municipality of Ziguinchor: Diatir, Néma, Grand-Dakar, Boucotte, Santhiaba and Escale. A concert of saucepans took place in the streets of Ziguinchor, at the initiative of their local leaders, as a protest against the way the current majority is running the country.

”If we obtain the majority of the seats in the National Assembly, the Director General of the Police, the Chief of the Gendarmerie and the Minister of the Interior will often be invited to the hemicycle to explain themselves on the police blunders and torture”, promised Guy Marius Sagna, making himself difficult to hear in front of the concert of saucepans and the hostile slogans towards the presidential majority.

”It’s necessary [reconnaître que] not all police and gendarmes are bad (…) If we obtain a majority in the National Assembly, we will refuse to vote the budget of the Ministry of the Interior if decent salaries are not paid to the police,” said supported Mr. Sagna.

He deplored the level of remuneration for the work of police auxiliaries, considering that they are poorly paid.

Accustomed to Senegalese prisons because of his numerous arrests, Guy Marius Sagna continues to castigate the living conditions of detainees.
