Beginning August 24, Walmart will finally start accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay across select stores and Sam’s Club locations. According to Modern Retail, the nationwide rollout for all U.S. stores and clubs will conclude by the end of 2026, followed by fuel stations by mid-2027.
Breaking a Decade of Friction at the Register
Apple Pay launched in 2014, becoming an accepted standard at more than 85% of retailers across the United States. For years, the retailer bucked that trend. Instead of integrating with ubiquitous tokenized payment rails, Walmart forced shoppers to use proprietary solutions like Walmart Pay or the OnePay Wallet. According to TechCrunch, the retail giant even attempted to build a competing mobile payment system called CurrentC alongside other merchants, though that venture shut down in 2016.
That defensive strategy is finally shifting. Walmart spokesperson confirmed to Modern Retail that the upcoming contactless rollout includes support for Apple Pay. Simultaneously, Google confirmed the integration for Google Pay on its website. Stavan Parikh, vp and gm of payments for Google, stated, “This update builds on Google and Walmart’s ongoing partnership, bringing the convenience and security of Google Pay to one of your favorite stores.”
The Phased Rollout Schedule
The deployment follows a timeline:
- August 24: Initial activation begins at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations.
- End of 2026: Contactless payment methods expand to all U.S. Walmart stores and club locations.
- Mid-2027: Rollout reaches Walmart fuel stations.
The hardware upgrade will support any eligible contactless card, smartphone, or smartwatch.
Expanding Existing Tech Partnerships
The introduction of Google Pay is just one facet of a broader technological alliance between the retail titan and Silicon Valley giants. Over recent years, Google and Walmart have collaborated on AI shopping initiatives. Furthermore, Walmart has maintained active commercial ties with Wing, a drone delivery subsidiary owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, to test aerial logistics in select markets.

Despite opening its terminals to third-party mobile wallets, Walmart plans to maintain its existing proprietary payment architectures. Shoppers will still have the option to use Walmart Pay via the core mobile application, along with the Scan & Go feature at Sam’s Club locations, where consumers scan items and pay using their phone.
For consumers accustomed to tapping a smartwatch or phone at the register everywhere else, the arrival of Apple Pay and Google Pay inside Walmart aisles removes a persistent friction point in modern retail commerce.
