The war in Ukraine helped push the global number of people internally displaced by conflict or natural disasters to a record 71.1 million people last year, according to a report released Thursday by the Council’s Center for Monitoring Internal Displacement. Norwegian for Refugees (IDMC).
By the end of 2022, 5.9 million people had been forced to relocate within Ukraine due to the Russian invasion, bringing the total number of internally displaced persons due to conflict and violence to more than 62 million, up 17%. than in 2021. Syria had 6.8 million displaced people after more than a decade of civil war.
The number displaced by catastrophes such as floods and famines reached 8.7 million at the end of last year, up 45% since 2021.
The total figure of 71.1 million people forced to leave their homes represents an increase of 20% over the previous year.
Internal displacement refers to people forced to move within their own borders. The IDMC report does not include those who left for other countries.
After a year in which conflicts left their mark in Ukraine, Syria and Ethiopia, among other places, 2023 has not let up. The United Nations migration agency said this week that 700,000 people have been forced to leave for other parts of the country in a matter of weeks by fighting between the army and a rival paramilitary group in Sudan.
IDMC cited the La Niña weather phenomenon, which continued for the third consecutive year in 2022, as one of the main factors in disaster displacement. It contributed to record floods in Pakistan, Nigeria and Brazil and the worst drought on record in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, the report said.
In 2022 there was a “perfect storm” of conflict and natural disasters that led to “displacement on a scale never seen before,” said Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council.
