Borrell, «I believe that Iran does not want an escalation»
“I honestly believe that Iran does not want an escalation that leads to a war”: this is what the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union Josep Borrell said, in light of a conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister Abdollahian after the attack launched by Tehran towards Israel on the night between Saturday and Sunday. Speaking to the Spanish radio Cadena Ser, Borrell however underlined that Iran “used more than 300 missiles and drones”, and therefore its action “was not a joke”, and that if Israel “had not had the technological means to shoot them down in flight, things could have been much worse.” The EU High Representative then said that “everyone” is “doing their utmost” from a diplomatic point of view to ensure that a possible response from Israel does not constitute “a further step in an escalation”, while observing that the first Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “has shown that he doesn’t listen too much to what he is told.” Such efforts, according to Borrell, are necessary at a time when “the Middle East is on the brink of the abyss” due to the risk of “a regional war” with “terrible consequences” for the area.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala began his visit to Washington with a surprise meeting with CIA director William Burns, as he himself revealed on of the Security Information Service (the BRI, the civil counter-espionage service) Michal Koudelka and the commander of the military intelligence service Jan Beroun. Last month the Czech prime minister announced that the BRI had uncovered a Kremlin-funded network that was spreading Russian propaganda and exerting influence across Europe, including the European Parliament. At the center of the network was the Prague-based news site Voice of Europe, which sought to discourage Europeans from sending further aid to Ukraine. Some European politicians who collaborated with the news site were reportedly paid by the Russians.

The CDU MEP, chosen by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen as envoy for SMEs, Mark Pieperhe decided to give up the job which was supposed to start tomorrow. The appointment was at the center of many protests due to the lack of transparency with which it took place, and was the subject of a letter of protest from four European commissioners and a vote against the European Parliament. His name would have been preferred by von der Leyen, his party partner, to the detriment of two other candidates with a better CV.
