[Wart Removal Protection]Do you have to have Claim Insurance for wart removal or if you spend more than 10,000 yuan? – Hong Kong Economic Times- Finance- Blog

Warts are a very common skin disease in Hong Kong and people of any age can get it. Although most warts are asymptomatic, some may experience itching and pain. Some medical institutions recommend that patients undergo wart removal treatment and claim compensation from the insurance company. However, not everyone can successfully claim compensation. In fact, claims for wart removal continue to be controversial. Today, 10Life talks to you about the types of warts, how to get rid of them, and the key elements of a successful claim.

What are the most common types of warts?
Warts are common contagious skin diseases caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which cause abnormal keratinization of the epidermis. There are more than 100 types of HPV, and different viruses can cause different skin problems. Among them, flat warts, plantar warts, and common warts are the most common.

5 Wart Removal Treatments
Most warts will disappear naturally within six months. However, if symptoms persist, wart removal may be necessary. There are many treatments for wart removal. Patients should first listen to the professional advice of a dermatologist, and then decide the treatment method according to their personal conditions. Readers should be aware, however, that since warts are a viral infection, there is still a chance that they will recur in the future even if they are cleared.

Wart Removal Treatment Fee in Private Hospital
Many medical institutions offer wart removal treatment, some claiming to be as low as several thousand Hong Kong dollars, while others price it by body part. As for private hospitals, there are currently only 2 companies that provide information on the charges for CO2 laser wart removal on their websites, with prices ranging from HK$2,500 to over HK$15,000. As prices may vary due to quantity and location, it is advisable to check with the relevant agencies for actual charges.

Can I claim insurance for wart removal? Not necessarily!
The Consumer Council published a report earlier, pointing out that some medical center staff claimed to be able to cover the cost of wart removal treatment through medical insurance. The Council reminds that unless the staff concerned hold an insurance practitioner qualification, it is difficult to provide reliable representations on insurance claims. The examples of successful claims mentioned by the staff may be the result of individual cases, and consumers should not believe them.

In fact, insurance companies will only pay for surgeries or procedures that are “medically necessary” and that are performed by a registered doctor in person. Surgery or treatment for cosmetic purposes is usually excluded. In addition, if the claimed amount exceeds the “reasonable and customary” medical expenses, the insurance company may not fully compensate the medical expenses.

In addition, users should also pay attention to the coverage of medical insurance. Even though some products provide full compensation for general surgeries, there may be individual compensation caps for specific surgeries. Taking the Fortis “Yue Kangbao” medical insurance plan as an example, for skin or subcutaneous diseased tissue excision, cryosurgery, electrocautery, and laser treatment, the surgeon’s fee will be reimbursed up to HK$5,000 per operation.

In order to reduce disputes, policyholders are advised to check with the insurance company before surgery or treatment to understand the scope of the claim and the initial compensation amount before deciding whether to proceed.
