Washington – The United States expressed its opposition to the International Criminal Court investigating Israel’s practices in Gaza, amid reports that Israeli officials fear that the body will issue arrest warrants once morest them.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a media briefing that the United States’ position “is very clear regarding the ICC investigation. We do not support it, and we do not believe it is within its jurisdiction.”
The Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that Washington does not interfere in the activities of the International Criminal Court and does not influence its decisions.
Israeli media said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is deeply concerned regarding the possibility of the International Criminal Court in The Hague issuing an arrest warrant in his name due to the military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu made an official statement regarding the possible actions of the International Criminal Court once morest Israel, stressing that he would not allow any attempts by this body “to undermine Israel’s inalienable right to self-defense.”
According to the prime minister, the threat to arrest military personnel and officials in “the only democracy in the Middle East” that Israel represents “will create a dangerous precedent” on a global scale.
