Washington – The US State Department clarified that the UN Security Council resolution regarding the Gaza ceasefire “is not binding, but must be implemented.”
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said yesterday, Tuesday, that they did not veto the bill, which calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza because, as an American administration, they support that.
Miller stated that the draft law does not impose any additional obligations on Israel, adding, “But we believe that they must be respected, because they have weight, and they must be implemented.”
On Monday, the UN Security Council issued a resolution supported by 14 countries, demanding an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, respected by all parties, leading to a “permanent and sustainable” ceasefire, while the United States abstained from voting.
The resolution also called for “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” as well as ensuring humanitarian access to meet their medical and other humanitarian needs.
The UN resolution was met with Arab and international welcome and calls for its immediate implementation, but Israel challenged it from the first moment, and said through its Foreign Minister Israel Katz that it “will not stop firing and will continue fighting until all detainees are returned and the movement of Palestinian factions is destroyed.”
