The possibility of receiving a counterfeit bill or coin is constant in the country, so Mexicans should know the steps to exchange them, since they should not try to put them into circulation.

How to change a fake bill?

In the event of receiving a counterfeit bill from an ATM or banking institution, people can file a claim with the credit institution to which the ATM or teller window belongs.

Those affected must deliver the false bill to the institution, and in case they no longer have it due to the retention of another bank, they will have to deliver a Receipt for the Retention of Metallic Coins and/or Presumably False Bills, which will be provided by the institution at the time to deliver it.

In addition, a copy of the official identification must be delivered, as well as a handwritten report specifying in detail the way in which the false piece was obtained, including the branch, date and time.

Likewise, it is recommended that, at the time of submitting the claim, the receipt of the transaction made in the institution that issued the ticket is delivered, for example; ATM receipt or teller receipt.

Subsequently, the bank will verify that the operation has been carried out in accordance with what was indicated in the report and, if the claim is resolved in favor of the user, the amount of the claimed part must be delivered.

In the event that Banxico does not favor the presumed owner of the note, they must be informed in writing of the reasons for the refusal and if they are not satisfied with the resolution, they can initiate a claim before the Condusef.

It should be remembered that, according to information from the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico)it should be taken into account that there are only 5 business days to change the ticket.

If you receive a counterfeit bill and try to return it to circulation, whether in stores, markets or some other business, you could be subject to a fine or up to 12 years in prison.
