Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is embarking on a new coaching experience
Birmingham FC, which plays in the English Football League (second level), announced today, Wednesday, the appointment of former Manchester United and England national team star Wayne Rooney as its coach with a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Rooney (37 years old) said, according to Agence France-Presse: “I am very pleased to join Birmingham at this exciting time. It is clear that they have a project and are determined to achieve their ambitions for the club. I look forward to starting my work.”
Rooney’s coaching staff will include former internationals, England’s Ashley Cole and his former Manchester United teammate, Irishman John O’Shea. Birmingham abandoned its former coach, John Eustace, a few days ago, despite currently occupying sixth place in the Champions League.
Rooney had reached an agreement with the American club DC United a few days ago to end their cooperation, after the former English star failed to lead the capital club to the playoffs.
Rooney previously had coaching experience in the “Championship” at the head of the coaching staff of the Derby County team from 2020 to 2022. Rooney is considered the third best scorer in the history of the English Premier League after scoring 208 goals in 481 matches, preceded by Harry Kane, the former Tottenham Hotspur scorer and the current German Bayern Munich striker.
