With changes to the Law on Electronic Communications, “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria” aims to improve protection against disinformation, informs the press service of “Democratic Bulgaria”.

“It introduces explicit competences of the Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) and the Minister of e-Government to define and implement the policy to limit systemic risks related to illegal content and online disinformation,” reports the coalition.

The texts are said to address four sets of problems:

  • coordinated inauthentic behavior in social networks through groups of inauthentic user profiles (so-called troll farms)
  • monetization of fake news from anonymous sites by displaying commercial messages (advertisements)
  • the distribution of misleading advertisements of non-medicinal products (nutritional supplements) through unregulated use of the names and faces of famous persons, including medical persons
  • some lost profits from local media service providers due to improper practices on global platforms.

It is indicated that the draft law has been published for public discussion. As of 6 p.m. on February 12, it was not published on the website of the National Assembly.
