“We must not throw oil on the fire”: Alexander De Croo reacts to Putin’s statements

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo advocated on Wednesday to “keep calm and don’t add fuel to the fire” following the strong speech of Russian President Vladimir Putinwhich has just decided to partially mobilize its army in its offensive once morest Ukraine.

“I believe that we must react with the necessary calm”commented Mr. De Croo to the VRT. “We must not throw oil on the fire. We must not act by provocation”.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister believes that the West cannot be intimidated by the Russian President. “We must be clear in our attitude and continue to support Ukraine.”.

The head of government thus recalls the sending by Belgium of arms to Ukraine for a total amount of 55 million euros since the beginning of the conflict. “We will continue on this path, in the areas where we are strong”.

As for the nuclear threat expressed by Russia, Mr De Croo pointed out that this is not new. “A few months ago, Russia had already done it. NATO reacted very calmly then. I think that’s what we’re going to do once more”
