Prior to the third joint meeting, Unter held a press conference at the entrance to the Ministry of Labor in the provincial capital and Silvana Inostroza, General Secretary of the union, stated that “We hope to come out today with a proposal to be analyzed in organic channels.”

The leader explained the call “to make society in general aware of the predisposition that education workers have, to reach an agreement, to be able to work, to be able to start the school year; But for this to happen we need not only that the schools are in good condition, that transportation and school cafeterias are guaranteed, but, fundamentally, “We need an urgent salary restructuring.”

He said that “the government of this province, hiding behind the fact that it has no money and aligning itself with the national government in that sense, is denying us, having our salaries frozen since the month of November.”

Inostroza stressed that “it is the responsibility of the government of this province to make us a salary proposal today that takes into account the inflation rate that affected us in November, but also that takes into account December inflation, which will be around 30%” and “If not, we ratify the non-start of the school year for 2024.”

In previous meetings, the teaching representation questioned the absence of the Minister of Education, Patricia Campos, in the negotiations; and the Secretary of Labor, María Avilez; and the leader said that “we understand that legally they may not be present” but “We understand what it does to the political responsibility they have once they assume those positions” because “they have to sit down with the union to negotiate, to discuss salaries” and highlighted that “they were elected for those positions and they have to take charge, as we do, even in the most adverse moments the representation is always at the forefront to give face”.
