Weather forecast: snowy day, watch out for ice on the roads

Winter precipitation that fell overnight could complicate your journey on the roads on Monday. There is 5 to 10 centimeters of snow depending on the region and there is a risk of ice in some places. The IRM is also issuing a yellow alert for slippery conditions in several regions of the country, including all of Wallonia and Brussels. So be careful if you drive.

It is very cloudy and overcast on Monday with, in the northwest of the country, some light rain or melting snow. Elsewhere, precipitation falls in the form of snow with an accumulation of 5 cm to 10 cm locally, indicates the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) in its morning bulletin. In the Hautes Fagnes, the snow cover can reach 15 cm.

From the northwest, the weather will become drier with slightly milder air. In Lower Belgium, the snow will turn into slush, then the snow cover will disappear. In the Ardennes, the snow will hold in most regions. The maxima will be between 0°C in the Ardennes, 2 to 3°C in the northwest and 5°C on the coast.

“Snow has been covering Lambermont (Verviers) since 4 a.m. this morning”Ermione reports shortly before 6 a.m. via the orange Alert us button. “Traffic on the E40 motorway from Liège to Brussels: two lanes out of three cleared correctly”also warns Frédéric Delfosse, our RTL INFO journalist, around 6:30 a.m.

In Liège, the police have already intervened for traffic accidents early this morning. Crumpled sheet metal at most. But it looks complicated on the roads at rush hour.

Yellow alert “slippery conditions”

Given this winter precipitation, the IRM also warns road users. The Royal Meteorological Institute issues a yellow alert for “slippery conditions” in several regions of the country, including the whole of Wallonia and Brussels. The warning applies from 6 a.m. this Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

This color code predicts fresh snowfall of 1 to 5 cm in the space of 6 hours or 5 to 10 cm in 24 hours, or the formation of (very) localized patches of ice, explains the MRI. Snowfall is announced until Tuesday morning in the south-east of Belgium while rain is expected in the north-west.

The center of the country will also experience slush or even snow that can stick to the ground. In many places, a layer of snow between 1 and 5 cm may form. In the province of Liège, the south of the province of Limburg and the east of Flemish and Walloon Brabant, the layer of snow could reach up to 5 to 10 cm thick in places, warns the IRM. The warning concerns the provinces of Liège, Hainaut, Namur, Luxembourg, Walloon and Flemish Brabants, Limburg and Brussels.

Mardi, the day will start with gray weather but during the day, clearings, sometimes wide in the northwest will appear. South of the Sambre and Meuse furrow, the weather will remain very cloudy with fog. On the coast, a few showers will be possible but elsewhere, the weather will remain dry. The maxima will be between 0 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes and 7 degrees at the sea.

Wednesday, the cloudiness will be variable to abundant with the possibility of a few showers, winter in the Ardennes, or even snow on the summits. The maxima will be between 0 degrees in the Hautes Fagnes and around 6 degrees in the center.

Thursday, the cloudiness will remain variable with first and foremost the risk of a few winter showers, or even snow in the Ardennes. The maxima will be between 0 and +3 degrees.
