Weather: When will the atmosphere clear of African dust – Temperatures up to 30 °C across the country – VIDEO – 2024-04-03 07:08:34

April did “football” with African dust and heat, making the atmosphere particularly stuffy.

The phenomenon of dust from Africa – always associated with heat – has now spread to more areas.

Apart from Crete which has been tested in recent days, high concentrations of dust are now found from the Peloponnese to Thessaloniki.

But it is not only Greece.

On a Meteo map dust transport is depicted that has blanketed Central and Eastern Europe while high concentrations appear as far as Scandinavia!

High temperatures

But how dangerous is what we inhale? Professor Theodora Psaltopoulou explains to Live News “with the increased temperature it becomes contaminated”.

This toxic mixture in the air combined with the high temperatures prevailing in Europe create a suffocating atmosphere.

The temperature today at noon in the Balkans is 12-13 degrees higher than the normal levels for the season, while in Greece the temperature will be 10-11 degrees higher than the normal levels for the season.

Problems with flights

Due to the weather conditions, a plane from Athens to Thessaloniki was delayed, while a flight from Istanbul was also cancelled.

Experts recommend limiting movement in the morning and lunch hours and the use of a mask especially for vulnerable groups.

The unusually high temperatures for the season will last until Tuesday, while the transport of African dust will begin to subside from Wednesday, April 3.

Very high temperatures until Tuesday (02.04.2024).

According to the meteorologist of MEGA, Yiannis Kallianos, the temperature will be at 28-30°C until tomorrow Tuesday with a predominance of southerlies and dust from Africa.

From Wednesday, the atmosphere will clear of dust. Temperatures will be warmer than the season at 24-26°C at least until April 10.

Three times more than normal the amount of dust in the atmosphere

Evangelos Gerasopoulos, director of environmental research at the National Observatory, when asked what the results of today’s dust measurement in Athens are, replied:

“Since yesterday and today the concentrations range from 80 – 120 µg/m³, when the statutory limit is at 50 µg/m³ and the new proposal to be adopted by the European Commission from the World Health Organization will be at 45 µg/m³. So we are talking about three times more.”

With regard to dust, the expert pointed out that two things must be taken into account: firstly, how much dust is released into the atmosphere and transported, and secondly, how much dust reaches the ground, because ultimately this matters for human health.
