Wes Miller Era Begins as Charlotte 49ers Open Season at Indiana State

The Wes Miller era of Charlotte Men’s Basketball officially gets underway on Monday evening at Indiana State, marking a fresh chapter for the program as the 15th coach of the 49ers in program history takes the sideline. Tipoff between the Niners and Sycamores is scheduled for 7 p.m., with live coverage broadcast on ESPN+. Fans looking for the radio call can tune into Matt Swierad’s broadcast via Charlotte49ers.com, the Charlotte 49ers Mobile App, or the Varsity Network App.

Monday’s season opener marks the fourth all-time meeting between Charlotte and Indiana State, as well as the second season in a row opening with the Sycamores. Last season, the Niners secured a 92-76 victory in Charlotte to start 1-0. The historical series dates back to a 1974 matchup in Terre Haute won by the Sycamores, followed by an 85-70 Charlotte win in the Queen City the next year. Meanwhile, Indiana State enters this contest coming off an 11-21 campaign in 2025-26, which included a 4-16 record in Missouri Valley Conference play.

Charlotte enters the 2026-27 season following a 17-17 finish last year, including a 9-9 mark in American Conference play. Under the guidance of Miller—who arrives in Charlotte after stints at Cincinnati and UNCG totaling 285 career victories over 15 seasons as a head coach—the roster features a massive overhaul. Three players followed Miller from Cincinnati: Jordi Rodriguez-Stegemeijer, Keyshuan Tillery, and Tyler McKinley. They are joined by nine additional transfers, bringing a total of 12 newcomers to the squad.

Roster Rebuild and Proven Scorer Additions

The influx of transfers injects significant collegiate experience into the Green and White lineup. Among the new faces are guards Dorian Finister and Chaze Harris, both of whom scored over 450 points in the Sun Belt Conference last season. Harris averaged 19.2 points per game for South Alabama, earning Sun Belt Player of the Year honors, while Finister averaged 14.9 points at Louisiana. Only two players return from Charlotte’s 2025-26 roster, with Arden Conyers back after averaging 7.5 points across 32 games, alongside Frank Oguche, who is looking to make his collegiate debut after redshirting last year.

The program also faces notable historical milestones this season. The 2026-27 campaign marks the 50th anniversary of Charlotte’s 1977 Final Four run, led by Charlotte Hall of Famer Cedric Cornbread Maxwell. The entire 1977 Final Four team is slated for induction into the Charlotte Athletics Hall of Fame as the sixth class in program history and is the first full team to be inducted. Additionally, Dale F. Halton Arena approaches its 30th anniversary, having opened on December 2, 1996, with a win over App State.

Opening Night Expectations and Program Milestones

As the Niners prepare for the opening tip in Terre Haute, they face an Indiana State squad undergoing a near-total roster turnover, returning zero minutes from the previous season. Charlotte’s rigorous offseason preparation included exhibition matchups against Georgia and North Carolina, where the Niners notably pushed the Tar Heels to overtime inside the Smith Center.

With a revamped roster featuring proven scorers and seasoned transfers, the team looks to build upon last year’s late-season surge under new leadership. The opening contest sets the tone for a schedule rich in historic anniversaries and high expectations inside Halton Arena, where the program sits just 12 victories away from reaching 300 all-time home wins.
