The virus is transmitted by mosquito vectors, particularly Culex. The most effective preventive measures to guard against mosquito bites are:

wear loose, covering clothing; use a skin repellent in the evening on exposed skin areas; if necessary, use mosquito netting on openings (doors and windows); sleep under mosquito nets, which may also be impregnated with insecticide for fabrics. There are crib mosquito nets for newborns; use fans and possibly air conditioners which bother mosquitoes; use electric diffusers inside dwellings; use insecticide coils only outdoors.
