Heading into Sunday’s contest, the Broncos established themselves as one of the toughest squads to break down on their home turf. Sunday’s meeting against Valpo followed a hard-fought defensive battle against No. 12 Colorado on Aug. 27 at the WMU Soccer Complex. In that fixture, the Broncos secured a 0-0 draw against the Buffaloes to move their overall record to 1-0-2. Sulaver turned in a sensational performance, stopping all seven shots she faced to record her first clean sheet of the 2026 campaign.
Offensive opportunities were hard to come by against Colorado’s high-caliber defense. June Mullen tested the visiting goalkeeper in the ninth minute with a shot on frame, while Kaiya Stewart nearly broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. After halftime, Camryn Huhn and Stewart continued to pressure the Buffaloes’ backline, culminating in a dramatic late push where Olivia Smith headed a corner kick from Meredith Vance toward goal with under 20 seconds remaining, only to be denied by a sprawling save from the Colorado keeper.
Scouting the Beacons
Valparaiso arrived in Kalamazoo looking to shift momentum following a 1-2-1 start to their 2026 campaign. The Beacons secured their lone victory against Western Illinois alongside a draw against SIUE. Historically, the all-time series heavily favored the hosts, with Western Michigan leading 7-2, including a 4-1 mark in Kalamazoo and an unbeaten run against Valpo dating back to 2012.
Despite a slower start in the win column, Valparaiso boasted multiple offensive threats, led by Kiara Desiderio’s two goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Adria Schultz handled the majority of defensive duties for the Beacons, entering the matchup with a 1-1-1 record, a 1.60 goals-against average, and a .714 save percentage across three starts.
