Westfield-Überseequartier postpones opening due to water damage 2024-04-11 19:45:41

DThe opening was planned big – with political celebrities and a concert. It was supposed to start on April 25th in the Westfield-Überseequartier, which was supposed to be an attraction for guests from all over the world in Hamburg’s Hafencity: with shopping and entertainment temples, hotels and restaurants, but also offices and several hundred apartments in 14 buildings on 419,000 square meters Area. An additional cruise terminal has even been created, which will take thousands of tourists directly to the 170 shopping and dining areas. A lighthouse project that is unique in all of Europe, enthused Andreas Hohlmann, German head of the real estate group Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW). More than 90 percent of the space is rented.

Now the investor has pulled the ripcord. The opening has been canceled and the new date is set for the end of August. The reason is: groundwater in the basement. URW is not really precise in its description of the debacle. “In part of the basement, groundwater occasionally penetrates through the floor slab. There is a central technical system in this area, which therefore cannot be put into operation in the short term,” says a press release, which the real estate company significantly distributed through a communications agency that specializes in legal issues. Even when asked, they were not prepared to describe in more detail which central technical system it was that was now suffering from water damage.
