What a tragedy! University student died while she handled explosives

A chemistry student, apparently from the University of Antioquia, died yesterday and three others were injured near the institution when handling explosive devices, police sources confirmed.

The events occurred inside a house in the Jesús Nazareno neighborhood, on Carrera 53 and Calle 64. Fire personnel were present to control the outbreak of fire that occurred after the explosion.

According to information from the authorities, the chemistry student was the one who suffered the worst and although she managed to receive medical attention, she died two hours later due to the seriousness of her injuries.

Sergio Andrés Muñoz, emergency specialist at the San Vicente Foundation, reported that three of the young people with polytrauma were admitted to the hospital. In addition to the deceased young woman, another of the young people was transferred to the operating room where he was stabilized and another one had to be transferred to an intermediate care unit.

As it was known, one of the injured belongs to the forestry engineering program and sustained injuries to his chest, right hand and face.

Although the events did not occur inside the University of Antioquia, the institution’s activities were suspended after 5:00 pm, the same entity confirmed.

Every June 8 and 9 the days of the fallen student are celebrated, so it is presumed that, although the authorities were not aware of large calls, it is possible that the device that the students manipulated was used in some demonstration.

The last record of a death of a student from the U. of A. due to the manipulation of artisanal explosive devices had occurred on November 3, 2019.
