What are the reasons behind the increase in the urgent passport fee?

The Acting Director General of Public Security, Brigadier General Elias Al-Bisari, has decided to increase the fee for urgent passport applications in Lebanon. The fee will now be 700,000 pounds in addition to the previous fee of 2,100,000 pounds, resulting in a total cost of 4,800,000 Lebanese pounds. The additional fee will go towards the Directorate’s fund and will be distributed to officers and members who have experienced force majeure situations with reduced salaries. This will help them to sustain themselves until an improvement in economic conditions. It is important to note that the urgent passport fee has been in effect since the time of Brigadier General Al-Baisari’s predecessors. The increase in the fee is not a significant burden to travelers, as it only amounts to about $6. It is also important to mention that the fee for an ordinary passport, which takes days to issue, remains the same at two million Lebanese pounds.

“Lebanese Debate”

The Acting Director General of Public Security, Brigadier General Elias Al-Bisari, took a decision today to raise the fee for the urgent passport application to 700 thousand pounds, in addition to the two million and one hundred thousand preceding this fee, so that the final urgent passport cost becomes 4,800,000 Lebanese pounds.

The increase in the fee for the “urgent” will enter the Directorate’s fund to be distributed at the end of each month to the officers and members of the Directorate, who suffer from force majeure conditions with the value of their salaries greatly reduced, and constitute a lever for their ability to withstand pending the improvement of the economic situation.

As a reminder, the urgent passport fee has been in effect since the days of his predecessors for Brigadier General Al-Baisari, and increasing this fee today will not constitute a great burden for travelers because it does not exceed $6.

However, the ordinary passport, which requires days to be issued, its fee remained the same, i.e. two million Lebanese pounds.

In conclusion, the decision by the Acting Director General of Public Security to raise the fee for the urgent passport application in Lebanon may be met with mixed reactions from citizens. While some might view it as a necessary means of supporting officers and members of the Directorate who are facing economic difficulties, others might see it as an additional burden in an already challenging economic climate. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that the fee remains relatively low compared to the US dollar, and only applies to those who require an urgent passport. For ordinary passport seekers, the fee remains unchanged. We hope that this decision will ultimately serve to benefit those who need it most, and contribute to the overall betterment of the security sector in Lebanon.
