What are the situations of stigmatization experienced in psychiatry?

Mental health practices are one of the main sources of stigma according to psychiatry users and their relatives1. The STIGMApro2 research program highlights the 15 situations experienced as the most stigmatizing.

A new study resulting from this program and published in the Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, aimed to identify situations of stigmatization in mental health care, specifically experienced by users with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and their relatives. Since the STIGMApro program has a fundamentally solution-oriented approach, the secondary objective of this survey was to identify the protective factors of this stigmatization in psychiatry for users. This publication3 uses participatory research methods, co-constructing a national survey with members of the Bordeaux Clubhouse. The results report 15 most stigmatizing situations in psychiatry and detail them from a table (below).

In the end, users who report few stigmatizing situations in their journeys have experienced little or no practice without consent and have benefited more from practices oriented towards recovery. Their families were also more satisfied with the collaboration with the professionals.
