Hello,
You ask us about a video that went viral on social media on Monday. We witness the violent attack of an individual, in a gathering of ten people, at the foot of a building in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis). Fallen behind a car under the blows, the individual gets up and heads for the tram tracks. He is then hit by the passing vehicle at the time, causing screams. The video is sometimes accompanied by comments referring to the anti-Semitic character of the attack.
On Twitter, presidential candidate Eric Zemmour, relayed these images, calling them “chilling” and denouncing a “deafening silence on the facts”.
The facts date back to February 17, 2022, and were initially only partially reported. In an article from Parisianwe learned that a man had been hit by a tram from the line 1 crossing Bobigny, at avenue Jean-Jaurès, and died of his injuries. According to the RATP, “she [la personne] crossed the platform of the tracks outside the pedestrian crossings”. An investigation was then opened for manslaughter by the Bobigny prosecution. There were no reports of any assault prior to the fatal accident.

It’s only March 31, on Radio Shalomthat Gérald Cohen and Raphaël Cohen, respectively the father and the brother of the victim, mentioned the aggression which preceded the death of the young man, evoking the video which circulates today. “We had a decisive testimony from a person who was able to film what happened and this thing could relaunch the investigation in a very important way”said the brother of the victim, explaining that the family had received this recording after launching an appeal for witnesses “by distributing flyers”.
In the same interview, the family had widely questioned the work of the investigators: “A few days after the death of my brother and without having seen the cameras of the tram, the investigator who received me confirms to me that we are moving towards a traffic accident. Which is incomprehensible without having seen the cameras”, lamented the brother of the victim. In the process, the father wondered: “Why does the family have to carry out its own investigation and provide the evidence to the police, to the IGPN so that the investigation can be reopened? If we had not called for witnesses concerning the massacre of my son, the investigation would have fallen by the wayside. According to the father, the “evidence collected was handed over to the police, the prosecutor’s office and the lawyers”.

In a press release sent to the press on Monday, the Bobigny prosecutor’s office indicated that a judicial investigation was opened on March 29 for “willful violence in meetings resulting in death without the intention of giving it”. According to the prosecution, the information collected during the first investigation had made it possible to establish that, “the victim had suffered violence a few moments before the accident”. A second investigation for “voluntary violence in meetings” had been opened, indicates the press release which assures that “the two investigations were carried out in parallel”. CheckNews is unable to confirm that the opening of the second investigation and the judicial information are the consequence of the receipt of elements provided by the family.
Anti-Semitic character in question
In the Radio Shalom interview, the family says Jeremy Cohen was wearing a yarmulke when the attack happened. “There is a yarmulke that has been found, that I can confirm to you”, assures the brother of the victim. However, it is not visible on the video, which is very blurry. According to the young man’s father and brother, he suffered from a disability, “who was not physically visible”.
In its press release, the prosecution does not mention a possible anti-Semitic character and specifies that “the investigation is continuing under the authority of an investigating judge and on a letter of request entrusted to the Seine-Saint-Denis departmental judicial police service”.
