The PlayStation 5 Pro, nicknamed “Trinity”, is normally for this year 2024. Among the expected features, the Ultra Boost Mode is particularly talked about. But what is this mode and what improvements will it bring to video games?

The third special graphics mode

In late March, Insider Gaming revealed details about the requirements for games bearing the “ PS5 Pro Enhanced “. Contrary to expectations, these requirements would not be as strict as expected. According to The Verge, even games displayed at just 30 frames per second can be marketed as “optimized for PlayStation 5 Pro”.

This improved mode would combine ray tracing with a frame rate of 60 fps and 4K definition via a new processing called Playstation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). According to current information, the latter is a TAAU (Temporal Anti Aliasing Upsampling) technology developed by Sony, which will initially only be available on the PS5 Pro.

Sony would therefore recommend that developers increase the frame rate to 60 fps using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology for the version of a game intended for the PS5 Pro. This recommendation would also include adding or expanding ray tracing. However, these 60 fps were not a base requirement for the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.

Besides, games that are simply displayed in a higher definition, or which reach a higher maximum definition with dynamic definition, are also likely to be announced as “PS5 Pro Enhanced”. It seems that just getting a more stable frame rate isn’t enough for a game to be labeled that way.

This could mean we’ll see “PS5 Pro Enhanced” games running between 1080p and 1440p at 30fps on the base PS5 and running between 1280p and 2160p on the PS5 Pro at the same frame rate.

The requirements for the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label seem largely comparable to what Sony did with the PS4 Pro. There is some flexibility so developers can choose what they want to improve. If a game is eligible for the label Enhanced, it can be displayed on the disc packaging and on Sony’s PlayStation Store pages. This will undoubtedly allow it to be sold for a little more.
