Chilean president Condemns Trump’s Pressure on Ukraine

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has strongly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Boric asserted that Trump is urging Ukraine to “accept the conditions of those who invaded it,” a position he deems “unacceptable.”

“A country invades the sovereign territory of your country. You (with your people) defend yourself. A few years later the president of another country that at the beginning (with another president) states that you really started the war and that therefore, he has to accept the conditions of the person who invaded him, and also return the help delivered, and presses everyone to do so,” Boric stated on social media platform X.

He emphasized, “That is what President Trump is doing with Ukraine and is unacceptable.”

Boric has consistently maintained that Russia‘s actions in Ukraine constitute an “unfair aggression” and has engaged in multiple meetings with Ukrainian President volodymyr Zelenskyy as the war’s commencement.

This rebuke follows a series of controversial statements made by Trump regarding the war and Zelenskyy. Trump has labelled Zelenskyy “a dictator without elections” and suggested that he should either “move fast” or “run out of country.”

The escalating tensions have strained relations between Trump and Zelenskyy. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who was elected in 2019, was slated to participate in elections scheduled for march or April 2024 but their postponement due to martial law imposed amidst the war casts a shadow over the situation.

Furthermore, Trump has accused Ukraine of instigating the conflict with Russia and criticized President Biden’s management for providing financial aid to a country embroiled in a “loseable war,” citing the conversations held in Saudi Arabia between American and russian officials aiming to end the conflict as evidence. Notably, Ukraine and its European allies were not included in these discussions.

Zelenskyy, in response to trump’s assertions, characterized the former U.S. president as dwelling in a “misinformation space” perpetuated by Russian influence during a press conference in Kyiv.

This latest exchange underscores the deep divisions surrounding the war in Ukraine and the complexities of navigating international relations in a conflict-ridden world.

It remains crucial for world leaders to prioritize diplomatic solutions and uphold international law while supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Boric: “Thanks for having me. I must say, I’m deeply concerned by former President Trump’s comments on the situation in Ukraine. U.S. aid to Ukraine is not just about supporting a country under attack; it’s about upholding international law and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. We can’t let the actions of one country be rewarded; we must hold Russia accountable and support Ukraine in its time of need.”
