Reliable detection methods remain vital for diagnosis, treatment, and medical care decisions involving patients who cannot move or communicate despite retaining conscious brain activity.
Unusual Human Experiences and Areas of Uncertainty
Beyond standard laboratory neuroscience, Koch plans to focus on three major areas of uncertainty that conventional scientific models struggle to explain. These phenomena include near-death experiences, mystical states, and episodes of terminal lucidity.
Terminal lucidity describes an unexpected return of mental clarity shortly before death, sometimes occurring in individuals with severe dementia or other conditions that previously left them unable to communicate normally. While these occurrences do not definitively prove that consciousness can exist entirely independently of the brain, Koch argues that they deserve serious investigation because they expose significant gaps in current scientific models.
