When Apple introduced the iPhone 4in June 2010, one of the main points that caught the attention of users was its completely renovated design, in addition to its screen that brought an extremely high resolution for the time.

She was baptized by the company of Retina display (Retina display) and, over the years, it was also taken to iPads, Macs and today it is also present in Apple Watches.

Find out below what a screen of this type means and follow its evolution! ????

After all, what is a Retina display?

Briefly, Apple calls a screen as “Retina” those in which there are a large amount of pixels in a given space.

Comparison between the curve of a letter on an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4, the first with a Retina display.

In the case of the iPhone 4, for example, its screen had 960×640 pixels, resulting in a density of 326 pixels per inch. With that, these panels allowed the human eye not to distinguish the pixels at a normal distance of use. That is, it was not possible, at least according to Apple’s marketing arguments, to look at individual pixels on a screen, as before.

For Apple, therefore, the name “Retina” means a screen that human eyes cannot distinguish individual pixels. According to the company’s accounts, the minimum density for this to occur in the case of an iPhone was 300 pixels per inch — at a distance of 25 to 30 centimeters.

Timeline of Retina displays on Apple products

After the iPhone 4, Apple started to take this same technology to other products:

2010: iPhone 4
2010: fourth generation ipod touch
2012: third generation iPad
2012: 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro
2013: iPad Mini
2014: Apple Watch
2014: iMac with Retina 5K display
2015: iMac with 4K Retina display

Even these other products having screens considered Retina, the number of pixels per inch ends up being greater or lesser than those seen on the iPhone 4, but it is good to note that Apple also takes into account the distance that your eyes are from the screen — something that it’s certainly bigger on a MacBook or an iMac compared to an iPhone.

Currently, Apple does not sell a single product in its entire lineup without a Retina display.

The evolution of the Retina display over the years

Apple has, over time, implemented many improvements to the Retina display. With that, we saw the arrival, for example, of Retina screens 4K, 4,5K, 5K e 6K that equip some iMacs and monitors, in addition to Retina HDyes Liquid Retina it’s yes Liquid Retina HD (LCD); and Super Retina HD (OLED), yes Super Retina XDR (OLED); and, more recently, the Liquid Retina XDR (Mini-LED).

The Liquid Retina XDR display on the current 16.2-inch MacBook Pro, for example, has 3456×2234 pixels — that is, 254 pixels per inch.
