DOOM or Quake with vehicles? At the moment it’s pretty unclear which games id Software is working on. Will it be Rage 3? Or Quake?
The renowned game developer id Softwarethat a year 2016 the DOOM series restarts and with DOOM Eternal expanded, hints that they could be working on a new first-person shooter game. It’s been over three years since Doom Eternal was released to rave reviews and accolades. It was even among the nominees for “Game of the Year” at “The Game Awards 2020” and was hailed as one of the best FPS titles of all time. Is it time for a new Quake or Rage, or is id Software staying true to the DOOM slayer?
Following the release of the final DLC for Doom Eternal, The Ancient Gods Part 2 in 2021, fans have been wondering what id Software will be working on next. With “The Ancient Gods” the story of the “Doom Slayer” has found a temporary conclusion and the Bethesda studio MachineGames takes care of the Wolfenstein franchise. This has sparked speculation that id Software could potentially turn to Quake or even Rage. Quake in particular could be interesting territory for the studio, especially after Quake 2 recently received an impressive remaster.

DOOM, Quake, Rage, …: Which game is id Software working on next?
The clues to id Software’s next project might be clearer now that a recently published job posting (via Gamerant.com) gives a glimpse of the likely genre of the game. The studio is currently seeking a lead weapons and props artist who has worked on at least one first person title. This raises questions as to why id Software only appears to want to fill such a position at this point. It seems like the production of a new game could have started as early as after the release of Doom Eternal three years ago or after the DLC “The Ancient Gods Part 2” in 2021.
It is particularly interesting that the job advertisement also mentions vehicles. Rage is id Software’s only franchise to include vehicles. This could indicate a possible new part of Rage, or even an entirely new token. It remains to be seen which direction id Software will take.

The team at id Software is working on an AAA title, which might indicate they’re tackling multiple projects at once. However, this remains speculation for the time being. While neither id Software, Bethesda, nor Xbox have officially confirmed what’s in development, things remain exciting for fans. We may learn more about this acclaimed studio’s new first-person shooter title next year, when it will already be four years since the release of Doom Eternal.
