The protection of the Moderna vaccine for Covid-19 is especially powerful against the Delta variant of the coronavirus, but it is not against infection with the Omicron variant.
However, research from the US Kaiser Permanente Center published in «
Nature Medicine» shows that the three doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine are very effective against hospitalization caused by infection with the Omicron or Delta variant.
The work has analyzed the data of 26,683 patients who had Covid-19, 16% of those with the delta variant and 84% Omicron, and more than 67,000 people who tested negative as a control group.
The results showed that the two doses of the Moderna vaccine were 44% effective against Omicron infection within 3 months of vaccination..
The effectiveness decreased rapidly from that period of time.
However, when one more dose was added, Moderna’s vaccine was 94% effective against Delta infection and 72% effective against Omicron within 2 months of vaccination.
Other data from the research shows that in people with compromised immune systems, the efficacy of the 3 doses against Omicron infection was less than 29%.
«Our results suggest that third doses may be needed sooner than 6 months after the second dose of the Moderna vaccine to protect against Omicro infection.n», says Hung Fu Tseng, researcher at Kaiser Permanente.
In addition, he acknowledges, “three doses may be inadequate to protect immunocompromised people from Omicron infection.”
