This story is hard to believe.
The Oscars have been around for about 100 years. But people still argue why it is called that way. Is it really in honor of a film figure who has now been forgotten? Or maybe they decided to immortalize the first winner?
Nobody knows for sure how it happened. But there are several surviving versions – one stranger than the other. The word “Oscar” was first used at the sixth ceremony, which took place on March 16, 1934. Actress Bette Davis claimed that it was she who gave the figurine its name. The star’s husband’s name was Oscar, so that was the choice.
The Academy’s executive secretary, Margaret Herrick, disagrees with the artist. She noted that she was the first to suggest this name. The award was very reminiscent of her Uncle Oscar. Like, everyone thought this option was worthy.
But there was also film journalist Sidney Skolsky, who was sure that it was he who first named the statuette an Oscar. He allegedly wanted to come up with some word to make it easier to write about the ceremony.
