After the end of the match against Ecuador, Tena spoke to the media and shared his reflections after the defeat. The strategist touched on topics such as the personality of his team and also expressed that the difference in level between the Guatemalan and Ecuadorian players was felt.

The Mexican considered that Guatemala played “a good game” despite the defeat. “In general we played a good game, it may seem incongruous because we lost 2-0, but we must recognize that the opponent has very good players and is a good team. Despite that, our team planted and played with personality“, said.

“We started well, until the goal fell, we resumed it at the end of the first half. Afterwards it became more even, I think Ecuador wins fairly but I am happy with the personality of the team and with the actions, circulating the ball better and better. It bothers me because all the chapines who came don’t leave happy, but I think our team is improving little by little in view of the qualifying matches in June“he commented.

“It is felt (difference in level between footballers), the players from Ecuador play in the best leagues, the Guatemalan player lacks international rose, we want them to leave Guatemala and go to more competitive and stronger leagues where they can grow“, he mentioned.

The duel at the Red Bull Arena was decided in favor of Ecuador thanks to goals from John Yeboah (8 minutes) and Gonzalo Plata (86). The team that is preparing to compete in the Copa América USA 2024 will play next Sunday, March 24, against Italy in the same stadium.

Guatemala, for its part, is in the full preparation phase for the World Cup qualifiers for the month of June. To arrive in the best way, the National Team scheduled friendly duels against Ecuador, Venezuela, Argentina and negotiations are also underway to secure a friendly match against Uruguay.
