What the songs of brown mice reveal about the timing of the brain – Nature

When you hear them in nature, you don’t exactly feel like you’ve been transported to an opera. Nevertheless, experts speak of “songs” when they talk about brown mice’s communication. The rodents from Central America communicate loudly and chirping at frequencies that are only partially audible to humans. The short-haired brown mouse’s arias are comparatively long at around ten seconds and quite complex. The mice, which are up to eight centimeters long (excluding the tail) and have dark brown, rough fur, not only provide evidence for research into speech, but also about our relationship to time. When they switch from andante to allegro in a duet with their peers or vary the length of their songs, they demonstrate a sense of timing and adaptability, as a new study shows.
