Federico Sacchi is a mediator, facilitator of collaborative processes and specialist in masculinities and social change at the UBA. Through DIG, invites us to rethink some questions about new masculinities and the impositions that men receive since childhood.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in exploring and understanding new masculinities. This concept challenges traditional conceptions of what it means to be a man and seeks to promote diversity and gender equality in our societies.

From different areas, spaces are opening up for reflect on expectations and stereotypes that surround masculinity, and to foster a more inclusive and prejudice-free vision.

The notion of new masculinities recognizes that there is no single way of being a man.. It moves away from the rigid roles and attributes that have historically been associated with masculinity, such as strength, aggressiveness or lack of emotional expression. Instead, it seeks to promote acceptance and appreciation of the diversity of experiences, emotions and gender expressions in men.

The concept of gender allows us to understand the power relations between men and women as sociocultural constructions that can be transformed. This has questioned the universal roles and attributes associated with women, recognizing the diversity of female experiences. It also opened the debate on sexuality, reproductive health, democracy, violence and family relationships.

“Nowadays, diverse families are being considered, leaving aside prejudices and valuing love as the main driving force. The idea of the heterosexual nuclear family is being challenged by the existence of trans, multicultural, homoparental and single-parent families, among others. This expands the possibilities and shows us new ways of conceiving family relationships,” Sacchi commented.

It is essential that society maintains active vigilance and questions the sexist narratives that emerge from politics, demanding equitable representation.

“The construction of masculinity involves a complex process influenced by socialization, social expectations and stereotypes. In our society, men are constantly expected to demonstrate traits such as rationality, aggressiveness, bravery, strength, and independence. They are also required to control their emotions and affections, supposedly to exert dominance over women,” she added.

What about politics?

Since ancient times, masculinities have been intrinsically linked to political power and the occupation of central places in decision-making. “It is essential to recognize that these often reflect machismo from the privilege of the male role, establishing a dynamic of inequality. In the current situation, we see the government that took office in a critical scenario where traditional expressions of masculinities influence public policies and shape social perceptions,” said Sacchi.

“We are critically exploring how the policies and actions of the current government can translate into the perpetuation of gender inequalities and sexist attitudes, threatening to dismantle previously achieved achievements. What dangers does this approach entail and how can it impact the social fabric?” asks Federico.

Machismo in politics is not simply a matter of ingrained gender stereotypes; It is an obstacle that perpetuates inequality and undermines progress. Hegemonic masculinities, when instrumentalized in the political sphere, not only limit options for those seeking unconventional leadership roles, but also contribute to the consolidation of policies and attitudes that reinforce gender hierarchies. The need to resist these trends cannot be underestimated; Otherwise, we risk losing the traction gained in promoting equality and diversities in the public sphere.

Sacchi assures that it is essential for society to maintain active vigilance, and question the sexist narratives that emerge from politics, demanding equitable representation.
