New military gadgets on the way: what will the Pentagon choose from this?

What technologies will be the future of the military

The Pentagon will soon begin reviewing projects developed under the two-year program Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve (RDER), to determine their further funding and implementation. This was stated by the chief technology officer of the department, who manages this project.

The Defense Acquisition Management Steering Board (DMAG), which includes representatives from all military services, will review a “list of projects” ready for implementation in the near future. Heidi Shew, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, shared this information with reporters, but did not specify which projects would be considered.

Some of the RDER experiments were carried out in May of this year at Camp Atterbury and as part of the Northern Edge Summer Experiments. Useful developments will be presented at the DMAG meeting, Shew said.

The sub-secretary also added that the Army and Air Force have expressed a desire to lead one of the RDER projects. Although Shew did not disclose the details of this project, she said that such a decision “confirms interest” in the results of the program.

At a National Defense Industrial Association conference, she compared the process to shopping at a wholesale store: if you combine orders, you can get a better price.

Over the past two years, Shew’s team has been experimenting with new technologies within RDER to close technology gaps faster. She also noted that future project funding depends on the current budget. The Pentagon has requested $687 million for RDER in fiscal year 2024, almost double the amount from the previous year.
