A study carried out in 2022 by Harvard University (USA), published in the scientific journal Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, showed that even cancers that were previously commonly diagnosed in older people – such as those of the intestine, breast, stomach and pancreas – have become more frequent among patients younger than 50 years.

Bowel cancer develops in the large intestine and is also called colon and rectal cancer. It is possible to prevent the disease, as it almost always develops from polyps – that is, benign lesions that grow on the wall of the intestine.

According to estimates by the National Cancer Institute (Inca), Brazil should register 44,000 new cases of the disease per year in the next three years, between 2023 and 2025.

Although it is not possible to guarantee that a patient will not develop the disease, genetics is a strong ally for prevention, says doctor Pedro Andrade, one of the pioneers in precision medicine in Brazil.

“In the case of bowel cancer, some people have genetic alterations, with polymorphisms in the NAT1, NAT2 and GATA3 genes, which are linked to the pathology. One of the factors that promote the expression of these genes, that is, the development of the disease, is the excessive consumption of red and processed meats, the famous sausages, such as sausages, sausages, hams, mortadella, salami, among others”, he points out.
