I wrote – Doaa Samir: “Meta”, the owner of the WhatsApp application, announced an important decision regarding stopping support for the application on smartphones running old operating systems under Android version 5.0 or lower, starting next month. Currently, WhatsApp works on smartphones running Android 4.1 or later, Apple iOS 12 and later, and KaiOS 2.5.0 and later. The company explained in its statement that this decision comes in response to the latest technological developments, and allows the application to use its resources more efficiently on newer operating systems. When WhatsApp stops supporting the user’s old system, he will receive recurring notifications and reminders urging him to update his device to ensure continued use of the application. The company added that it will update the Frequently Asked Questions page periodically to provide users with the necessary information about supported versions of Android. On the other hand, WhatsApp will continue to support iPhones running iOS 12 and later. After this decision, many users of old phones will face a challenge in using the WhatsApp application sustainably, as they will have to upgrade their devices to the latest versions to benefit from the application’s services.
