WhatsApp launches “channels”, to follow the activity of brands or personalities

What is this ?

As explained in a press release published on the Whatsapp blog, this new function is tested in 150 countries (including France), before being accessible to all users around the world. The principle is simple: “channels” allow you to follow the news of personalities or companies, via “threads” containing messages, photos or videos. A concept reminiscent of the “broadcast channels” recently launched on Instagram, in which influencers like Léna Situations participated.

How it works ?

Content is only posted by the people or entity being followed, with feed followers only able to respond via emojis. If the creation of these “channels” is currently reserved for public figures, all users should have access to them “in the coming months”, announced the Meta group, owner of the application. WhatsApp will also have an “updates” tab, which will bring together the latest publications from the followed channels, in a feed similar to the social network X. Note that the list of followed channels is not visible to other users.
