WhatsApp Status Now Supports 30-Second Music Clips

WhatsApp is rolling out an update for Android and iOS that doubles the maximum length of music clips in Status updates to 30 seconds. Spotted across beta and stable channels, the feature introduces an interactive duration picker inside the music editor, granting users granular control over their audio selections for both photo-attached and standalone music statuses.

The Architecture of the Expanded Duration Picker

Fifteen seconds used to be the hard ceiling for audio snippets on Meta’s primary messaging platform. Engineers have now doubled that threshold to 30 seconds across compatible mobile clients. According to WABetaInfo, the functionality appears natively in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.36.1 and WhatsApp for iOS version 26.35.72.

When users select a track from the Meta music catalog, the software renders a scrolling timeline. This interface lets creators dial in exact clip lengths down to the individual second. It breaks away from rigid UI constraints that previously forced tracks to cut off arbitrarily. Users no longer have to settle for an awkward mid-verse snippet if a track’s intro takes longer to build.

Flexibility Across Media Formats

The feature isn’t restricted to a single deployment vector. WhatsApp supports the expanded 30-second ceiling across two distinct publishing modalities:

  • Photo Status Updates: The audio track plays concurrently alongside a static image asset for the exact duration specified in the editor.
  • Music-Only Status Updates: Users can publish an audio clip as a standalone visual status without attaching a primary image layer.

Creators retain the freedom to scale down durations for shorter choruses or quick audio hooks that peak before the half-minute mark. This structural balance prevents status updates from ballooning into full-length track playbacks while resolving user complaints about truncated hooks.

Rollout Mechanics and Ecosystem Impact

Getting immediate access isn’t as simple as tapping update in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Meta is deploying the functionality via staged server-side toggles. Updating the client package helps lay the necessary protocol groundwork, but users may experience a latency period before the duration picker visibly populates on their specific account.
