WhatsApp, Telegram: watch out for this spyware that can target you

2023-11-07 20:24:42

To bypass device security and make as many victims as possible, hackers hid malicious code in previously harmless “mods”. For those who don’t know, these are very popular little pieces of software that allow users – only for the Android version – to add new features or customize the interface of their messaging application. These third-party applications are unofficial and are hidden under the radar via dubious sites. Suffice to say that it is relatively easy to install spyware discreetly.

Once installed, it then transforms your smartphone into a spy. In the process, the malicious implant sends a request containing information regarding the device to the attacker’s server. It further transmits the victim’s contacts and account details every five minutes. And that’s not all. It can also activate the microphone remotely and exfiltrate files from external storage, warns the company Kaspersky, in a communiqué.
