In Ukraine, as in many other countries of the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine from 1999.

History of the holiday
The history of this holiday began in 1908, when a young American woman Anna Jervis from Philadelphia proposed to celebrate the day in memory of her mother who passed away too soon.
She actively addressed letters to state and legislative bodies, as well as to prominent individuals, proposing to establish one day a year to honor mothers. Thanks to her efforts, in 1910, the state of Virginia was the first to recognize Mother’s Day as an official holiday.
This day symbolizes eternal attachment to maternal greatness, which is passed down from generation to generation, because for every child, her mother is the most important person.
The connection between the celebration of Mother’s Day and Christianity
The celebration of Mother’s Day falls on the month dedicated to the Holy Mother of God. This holiday allows believers to turn to the Mother of God for intercession and help, as well as to express gratitude for the selfless love of mothers.
