Herbert Grönemeyer wanted to know when a man is a man back in 1984. His attempt at an answer was a series of clichés associated with being a man. Almost 40 years have now passed – and it is not clear how much the image of men has changed since then. In change it is clear. Nevertheless, many clichés are still firmly anchored in people’s minds, and “typically male” behavior à la Grönemeyer is still widespread today – in both positive and negative ways. And the expression “toxic masculinity” has become a widespread buzzword, especially for clichés with negative connotations.
