The legal offensive against Silicon Valley’s attention economy hit a financial milestone as New Mexico state judge Bryan Biedscheid finalized the remedies phase of the state’s lawsuit. The $567 million fund aims to help pay for the supposed “harms” of Meta’s properties to New Mexico kids. This fresh assessment arrives following a $375 million civil penalty awarded by a jury.
When combined, the total liability hits $942 million.
Judicial Architecture: Mandating Product Constraints Without Engineering Oversight
Judge Biedscheid went beyond financial restitution by instituting mandatory design changes for users under the age of eighteen across Facebook and Instagram. Furthermore, push notifications are restricted during sleeping hours (10:00 PM to 7:00 AM) and academic hours (8:00 AM to 3:00 PM) during the academic year, excluding weekends, “like counts” must be hidden by default unless parents or guardians override the setting, and age verification mechanisms must be enforced.
