On May 9, 1868, Anton Bruckner had reached his destination: the composer had invited people to the premiere of his first symphony in the Redoutensaal in Linz. The master himself stood at the podium; he had recruited the musicians himself, the brass players from the military band, as well as members of the theater orchestra and “several gentlemen dilettantes,” as the Linzer Zeitung wrote.
