Tesla launches new universal charger

Tesla today announced a new universal wall jack, Tier 2 EV charger designed for home use, as well as at 40,000 public Tesla Tier 2 charging stations. This means owners of any non-Tesla EV will be able to use this latest charging hardware. Tesla without a separate adapter.

Considering a critical mass of automakers recently announced that they will be switching from a J1772 plug to a Tesla NACS socket in 2025, this is not surprising. Now Tesla will not only benefit from having non-Tesla car enthusiasts pay to charge at the Supercharger, but it will also potentially sell many more home chargers. Meanwhile, other big players in home charging like ChargePoint are rushing to add Tesla’s NACS plug to their equipment.

The new unit looks almost identical to its third-generation wall-mounted counterpart currently on sale, and all specs are retained as well, with two key differences. First, it’s a built-in adapter that allows you to smoothly switch between connecting to a vehicle with a Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, which is currently only found on Tesla, and a J1772 round plug, which is used to charge almost all other electric vehicles in the US. . This is similar to the so-called Magic Dock adapter that the company has built into some of its latest Supercharger stations to be able to quickly charge non-Tesla electric vehicles. Another major change is that through the Tesla app, users will be able to schedule or stop and start charging, as well as view charging and power consumption history for the first time.

The current wall jack already has Wi-Fi connectivity for firmware updates and the ability to network multiple devices to share power from the same circuit without exceeding peak programmable power consumption. While Tesla owners can track their charging history through the vehicle and a third-party app like TeslaFi, there is currently no way for non-Tesla owners to track their charging.

Tesla currently sells wall chargers with NACS ($475) or J1772 ($550) connectors, while the price of the new universal charger has risen slightly to $595.
