The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its vaccination recommendations for the prevention of cervical cancer. New data have shown that a simple vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) offers sufficient protection for women under the age of 21, the organization’s expert committee said. So far, the WHO had recommended a double vaccination.
The new recommendations aim to help ensure that more girls and women around the world can be vaccinated while maintaining the necessary level of protection, said the committee’s chair, Alejandro Cravioto. National vaccination programs can therefore maintain two doses if they deem it necessary. For women over the age of 21, the recommendation of a double vaccination at intervals of six months still applies.
Cervical cancer is almost always due to previous infection with a sexually transmitted human papillomavirus. In 2020, more than 340,000 women died from cervical cancer worldwide. It is the fourth most common cancer in women.
