The Bill of Rights 1689 and the Compromise Act 1701 restricted the succession to the throne in Britain to the legitimate Protestant descendants of Sophia of Hanover who “follow the Church of England”. Roman Catholic spouses were excluded from 1689 until the law was amended in 2015. The descendants of Protestants who were excluded because they are Roman Catholics are entitled to the throne.
Queen Elizabeth is sovereign and her apparent heir is her eldest son, Charles, Prince of Wales, followed by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, eldest son of the Prince of Wales.
