Mykyta Melnyk Nears Champions League Debut for Napoli Amid Defensive Crisis
Mykyta Melnyk, an 18-year-old Ukrainian right-back playing for Napoli’s Primavera squad, could make his UEFA Champions League debut against Porto as manager Max Allegri faces a severe defensive shortage with all four senior full-backs unavailable, ilnapolista.it reported.
The call-up follows a bench appearance at the Allianz Stadium for Juventus versus Napoli. That taste of senior action marked an early milestone for the teenager, who joined Napoli in 2025 after previously playing for Imolese and beginning his youth training at Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Ukrainian Train Drives Napoli’s Right Flank
Referred to as the “Ukrainian train” for his aggressive forward runs and high-velocity flank play, Melnyk combines defensive fundamentals with the ability to attack open space. Those characteristics draw tactical comparisons to senior captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Melnyk signed his first professional contract with Napoli last summer after participating in the club’s pre-ritiro under Allegri. The manager maintains daily communication with Primavera coach Nocerino, whom Allegri previously appointed during his tenure at Milan. Last season, the defender contributed two goals across 27 appearances for Napoli’s Under-18 squad while also making select appearances in the Primavera division and the UEFA Youth League.
Stepping Into European Competition
In the current campaign, Melnyk anchors Nocerino’s right defensive channel in both domestic competition and European fixtures, recording eight total appearances and one assist. Having already faced Arsenal and Bodø/Glimt in youth competition, the Ukrainian youth international now stands on the brink of senior European minutes.
If deployed against Porto, Melnyk will become the first player born in 2008 to take the pitch in an official match for Napoli’s senior side.
