Sergio Ziliotto was re-elected this Sunday, May 14, as Governor of La Pampa and against the candidate of Together for Change, the radical Martín Berhongaray, in a victory that adds up to ten consecutive terms as head of the provincial Executive Power since the return of democracy in December 1983. The elected governor is remembered for having affirmed, in 2020, that “the Argentina that works has many porteños left over”, when questioning the demonstrations that took place in the City of Buenos Aires against the mandatory quarantine decreed by the government in the face of the pandemic.
60 years old and nicknamed “the Russian“, Ziliotto is a native of the town of General Pico and his first steps in politics were in the Peronist Youth of the National University of La Pampa. From 1999 to 2003 he served as advisor to Governor Carlos Verna while he was a senator. being undersecretary of provincial Social Policy until 2006 and also served as Minister of Social Welfare for two years. In 2015 he was elected national deputy for his province.

His jump to the national scene occurred in June 2018, when changed his vote at the last minute together with his co-provincials Ariel Rauschenberger and Melina Delú in the session of Deputies in which the bill that sought to legalize voluntary abortion was debated. Chosen by Verna as his “heir”, Ziliotto prevailed with 52% of the votes over the UCR-Cambiemos candidate Daniel Kroneberger in the 2019 elections and achieved the PJ’s tenth term in his province since 1983. “Mine It’s going to be a different government,” he warned upon taking office. “I don’t want to be the new Verna. There is going to be a much more horizontal assembly, I want to govern with everyone, but I don’t leave driving to anyone.”
