WHO launches global plan to combat dengue

Fight dengue! The World Health Organization (WHO) announced this Tuesday the launch of a strategic plan to improve global preparation and response to dengue, given the exponential growth of cases in recent years and its possible extension to new regions such as Europe and the southern United States.

Global plan to combat dengue

Velayudhan warned that the number of global dengue cases has been doubling each year since 2021 and in the first eight months of 2024 alone, 12.3 million infections and 6,000 deaths have been confirmed, the majority in the American continent.

“The disease is now endemic in more than 130 countries,” said the expert, citing as factors for its rapid advance uncontrolled urbanization in certain areas with poor hygienic conditions, the effects of climate change and increased international travel.

The plan “seeks to reduce the burden and suffering caused by dengue and other diseases caused by arboviruses, increasing the coordination of the global response,” highlighted the head of the WHO.
