Hundreds of masked anti-immigrant demonstrators converged on Portsmouth late Sunday to block lifeboats and processing buses carrying about 140 asylum seekers who crossed the English Channel from Normandy. The British government condemned the disorder as thuggish behavior, while police ultimately dispersed the crowds using threats of arrest.
Portsmouth Confrontation and the Channel Crossing
The vessel carrying approximately 140 migrants set off early Sunday from Normandy, a departure point far west of the beaches near Calais. Because of the extended distance, the Border Force and the Coastguard determined that continuing another four or five hours toward Dover was unviable. Officials instead directed the boat to Portsmouth, supported by lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter, and a plane managed by Britain’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Reporting indicates that the Portsmouth demonstration was organized by Daniel Thomas, a far-right agitator who holds multiple criminal convictions and maintains close links with veteran far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson. Recordings from the scene captured Thomas telling the gathered crowd that Portsmouth is now ground zero
for asylum seeker arrivals.
The unrest in Portsmouth followed a similar protest on Saturday that brought Britain’s busiest ferry port at Dover to a standstill. During the Dover demonstration, protesters blocked roads leading to the port, clogging traffic and disrupting travelers as well as cargo vehicles heading for France. Following the Dover disruption, Thomas posted messages on social media labeling the action a “warning”, suggesting further action to come.
