The FluTrackers site today includes information published by the Czech newspaper Young Front TODAY who point out that the forecasts of epidemiologists who spoke of a risk of a resurgence of whooping cough in Czech Republic this year are becoming more and more true. Last week alone, 374 new cases were recorded, the highest number since the start of the year and almost as many as for all of last year.

Since the start of the year until Sunday February 25, 1,217 cases of whooping cough have already been reported to the infectious diseases information system, including 30 cases in children under the age of one. Last year, the country recorded 494 cases in the whole year and this year (2024) “at least three to four thousand cases could be recorded.

The South Bohemian region is reporting the highest number of whooping cough cases this year, with 246 people falling ill so far. It is followed by the region of Central Bohemia with 211 cases, the region of Vysocina with 180 and the region of Pardubice with 161. Conversely, it is the region of Carlsbad which has the fewest cases, with only three people falling ill with whooping cough so far.

The people most infected are high school students, then schoolchildren aged 10 to 14. Most of the time these people have a history of vaccination in their childhood.

Whooping cough epidemics recur cyclically every five years or so, but this year’s is certainly the strongest in ten years. In the time of Covid-19, whooping cough has almost disappeared, with only a few dozen cases. Before that, the highest incidence was recorded in 2014, when 2,521 people fell ill. If the infection continues to grow at the current rate this year, the same values will be reached by mid-March.
